The Greater Lyons Urban Community wants to upgrade and expand its heating and cooling network in Lyons Villeurbanne. With a total capacity of 230 MW and a length of 108 kilometers, this network is the third largest in France. It supplies 41,500 household equivalents, mainly in the 3rd, 6th and 7th arrondissements of Lyons and the Tonkin and Gratte-Ciel neighborhoods of Villeurbanne. The cooling network serves the Part-Dieu neighborhood. The main extensions will be built in Lyons's 8th arrondissement.
The facilities first went into operation in 1971, and the Urban Community's specifications for the new concession holder includes an ambitious plan for technological, commercial and social development. The objective is to reduce customer's heating costs and make greater use of renewable energies. At the time, the sources for the network's energy needs are waste (45%), oil fuel (42%) and gas (13%). The target is 60% of energy from renewable sources.
