Poznan - POLAND

Cogeneration and heating network

A winning combination

Challenge

Located 300 kilometers west of Warsaw, Poznan is one of Poland's biggest cities, with a population of 600,000. It is halfway between Berlin and Warsaw, on a major transit route between Eastern and Western Europe. In 2002, Dalkia took over management of the city's district heating network under the first privatization of this type in Poland. The network provides heating for 200,000 people and is the country's seventh largest. The contract between Dalkia and Poznan required the

operator to invest in sources of heat production for the district network. This could have been done by building a new power plant or by acquiring shares in the state-owned company supplying the network, which was slated for privatization. Dalkia chose the second option and, on March 1, 2004, the Polish treasury department awarded the division the contract privatizing the Poznan electricity and heat generating plant.
